Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the newly elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, visited the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) on Tuesday to provide updates on recent developments in the Assembly and to seek the council’s blessings.
Speaking after the meeting at Lagos House, Marina, Meranda stated, “We came to brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessings, which we have received.”
Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, was elected Speaker on Monday following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa. Her election makes her the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and a trailblazer in the South-West region.
Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency I, was impeached after a 10-year tenure as Speaker, with more than two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly voting for his removal over alleged misconduct and other offenses.
Addressing the media, Abiodun Tobun, a member of the Assembly representing Epe Constituency I, explained the decision. “The Constitution empowers the House to regulate its proceedings. Members of the Assembly felt they had seen enough of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa. We unanimously agreed to elect Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda Lasbat as the new Speaker,” he said.
Tobun further emphasized that the move was aimed at preserving the Assembly’s integrity and meeting the expectations of their constituents. “We cannot allow this House to dwindle. We owe it to Lagosians to restore the sanctity and integrity of this legislative body,” he added.
Obasa, first elected to the Assembly in 2007, had served as Speaker since 2015 before his removal this month. His successor, Meranda, served as his deputy until her unanimous election by lawmakers.
The leadership change signals a new direction for the Lagos State House of Assembly, with expectations of strengthened governance and accountability.
