The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, has declared an end to the longstanding supremacy contest between two major Yoruba monarchs—the Alaafin of Oyo and the Ooni of Ife.
Speaking to journalists after a visit to the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, on Sunday, Oba Alao emphasized unity among traditional leaders, describing the Alaafin as a wise and divinely appointed monarch.
As the Vice Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Alao expressed delight over the new Alaafin’s qualities, noting that their discussion focused on progress for the state government, traditional institutions, and the entire Yoruba land.
“My visit is to pay homage to the new Alaafin. Our bond runs deep—Olugbon, Aresa, and Onikoyi have historical ties to the Alaafin dating back to the Oyo Empire,” he said. “This new Alaafin is brilliant, wise, and composed. We’re fortunate to have him.”
He also praised Governor Seyi Makinde for overseeing a transparent and exceptional selection process that produced Oba Owoade I, calling it “extraordinary.”
“I commend Governor Makinde for his outstanding role. He has installed prominent monarchs with excellence, and this Alaafin’s emergence stands out,” Olugbon added.
He stressed the importance of cooperation between traditional rulers and the state government, saying the Council of Obas is working in tandem with the governor’s administration to advance the state.
Oba Alao urged fellow traditional rulers to embrace peace and unity, emphasizing there is no longer a rift between the Alaafin and the Ooni.
“Let there be calm. The Alaafin remains the Alaafin, and the Ooni remains the Ooni. There is no conflict—only collaboration moving forward,” he said.
