Nigerian model Olajumoke Orisaguna, famously known as “Olajumoke Onibread,” has shared a deeply personal account of her struggles with domestic violence and the challenges that followed her rise to fame.
Speaking during an interview, Olajumoke recounted enduring a turbulent relationship with her ex-husband, Sunday Orisaguna. She disclosed that the abuse began during their time in Ire, Osun State, where she faced a hostile living environment, including mistreatment from her mother-in-law and alleged physical abuse from Sunday.
After moving to Lagos to seek better opportunities, Olajumoke began hawking bread to support her family. It was during this time that a chance encounter with renowned Nigerian photographer TY Bello and British rapper Tinie Tempah catapulted her to international fame in 2016.
However, her relationship with Sunday remained tumultuous. Despite her blossoming career, she revealed that he continued to physically abuse her, even in the house rented for her in Surulere. Olajumoke said societal pressures and the stigma surrounding separation, especially as a mother of two, kept her silent for a long time.
“I couldn’t tell anyone what was happening,” she said. “Sometimes, he would come home drunk and, over minor misunderstandings, start beating me. I endured it all because I didn’t want my children to suffer.”
She added that Sunday, who was unemployed at the time, would monitor her movements, accuse her of infidelity during late-night photoshoots, and insult her parents.
After enduring years of abuse, Olajumoke finally separated from Sunday nearly four years ago. However, she revealed that the separation marked the beginning of new challenges. She alleged that Sunday worked to tarnish her reputation and discredit those who supported her, significantly impacting her career.
“Since then, everything started going downhill,” she lamented.
