Osogbo, Osun State – Governor Ademola Adeleke has exercised his constitutional powers to grant pardon to Segun Olowookere, who was sentenced to death for armed robbery in 2014.
Olowookere’s accomplice, Sunday Morakinyo, also received a pardon, alongside 51 other inmates who were recommended for mercy by the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
The pardon brings to an end the lengthy legal battle for Olowookere and Morakinyo, who were arrested in 2010 for breaking into homes and stealing property.
Governor Adeleke’s decision is seen as a move to show compassion and mercy to those who have been convicted of various offenses.
The pardon beneficiaries include 30 inmates who had their sentences remitted and forgiven, 12 inmates who received outright pardon, and 6 convicts who had their death sentences commuted to outright release or reduced imprisonment.
