Conrad Utaan, a chairmanship aspirant for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has issued a stark warning that the All Progressives Congress (APC) could secure an easy victory in the 2027 elections if the internal crisis within the PDP remains unresolved. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Utaan pointed out that the ongoing rift has rendered the party’s key figures ineffective and significantly tarnished its image among Nigerians, once considered a formidable alternative to the ruling APC.
The PDP has been grappling with internal disputes since the lead-up to the 2023 elections, with many blaming the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, for failing to restore stability after the removal of Senator Iyorchia Ayu. Utaan argued that it is crucial for the North Central zone to propose a replacement for Damagum at the forthcoming National Executive Committee meeting on October 24. He emphasized that this move would allow the zone to complete its tenure and help steer the party back on course.
Utaan, who reiterated his intention to serve only the remainder of the North Central’s term, urged the party to focus on peace and reconciliation. He expressed his willingness to seek support from influential party members to mend relationships and strengthen the PDP ahead of 2027. Highlighting his grassroots connection, he underscored his suitability to lead with humility, sacrifice, and dedication to reviving the party’s appeal.
He further stated that the PDP’s future success hinges on unity, adding, “We cannot afford another term of infighting. Our party needs fresh energy and leadership to regain its lost glory and compete effectively in the 2027 elections.
