Following the tragic stampedes during food distribution events in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Saturday, which claimed several lives and left many injured, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed concerns over the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) directive on organizing similar charity initiatives.
The IGP had called on organizers of charity programs to involve security agencies and adhere strictly to crowd and safety management protocols. However, Obi, while acknowledging the importance of public safety, warned that the directive could discourage charitable acts.
In a post shared on his X handle on Monday, Obi described the directive as “a timely response” but cautioned that it was “open to abuse” and might stifle acts of goodwill.
“It is capable of discouraging citizens from helping the hungry and distressed among us. While I understand the need for better organization and more attention to public safety, it is important to clarify that acts of goodwill should not be hindered by excessive bureaucracy,” he said.
Obi emphasized the need for better coordination rather than creating barriers for individuals or groups trying to assist the less fortunate.
“The focus should be on promoting coordination, not imposing barriers that could deter much-needed acts of kindness in a time of widespread hunger, pain, and anger. This is not the time to stifle the spirit of compassion and generosity among our people. Instead, let us channel these efforts constructively, ensuring that help reaches the most vulnerable safely and efficiently,” he added.
Obi further urged the Federal Government to address the root causes of the hardship, calling for “lasting solutions rather than creating obstacles for those stepping in to fill the gaps created by the government’s insensitive policies.”
He called on the IGP to reconsider the directive, stressing the need for collaboration rather than measures that could discourage support for vulnerable Nigerians.
“I urge the IGP to immediately review this directive and ensure that the police fosters collaboration and support, not division and discouragement, in our shared quest to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians,” Obi stated.
The stampedes, which occurred during food aid distribution, have sparked nationwide mourning and calls for better management of charity events to prevent future tragedies.
