Operatives from the Imo State Police Command’s Counter-Terrorism Unit successfully repelled an attack by suspected Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) terrorists during a routine patrol along the Owerri/Aba Road, near Owerri Airport.
The incident, which occurred yesterday, saw about ten attackers, traveling in two vehicles, launch a violent assault on the patrol unit. The brave officers managed to counter the attack, resulting in the neutralization of one suspect and injuries to others who fled the scene. No casualties or injuries were reported among the police operatives.
In the aftermath, the police recovered an AK-47 rifle, 15 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, an IPOB/ESN flag, and an abandoned ash-colored Mercedes Jeep with Lagos State registration number AAA 101 GR. A thorough search of nearby bushes is ongoing to locate the remaining suspects.
The state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, commended the officers for their bravery and urged the public to report any individuals seen with or seeking treatment for gunshot injuries to the nearest police station. He assured residents of the command’s commitment to ensuring public safety and addressing any threats to peace in the state.
