Posters of renowned Ibadan-based broadcaster, Dr. Hamzat Oriyomi, have appeared across major streets in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, sparking speculation about his possible entry into the 2027 general elections.
The posters, boldly captioned “2027 Oyo n pe o” (Oyo is calling you), feature a striking image of the veteran Yoruba broadcaster in black, though they give no indication of the specific political office he may be vying for. The development has triggered widespread public interest, particularly among supporters who have continued to rally behind the founder of Agidigbo FM.In a video shared by one of his support groups on Wednesday, Oriyomi was seen engaging with a cheering crowd at a public event, where attendees persistently urged him to heed the “call” of the people to join the political race.
“Okiki (Hamzat), Oyo is calling you. Answer their call,” supporters were heard chanting.
Reacting to criticisms surrounding his rumored political ambition, the official social media pages of the “Oyo n pe o” movement issued a statement defending Oriyomi’s transition from media to politics. The statement read in part: “The claim that ‘governance is more than speaking into a microphone’ reflects a misunderstanding of leadership. Broadcasting is rooted in communication, empathy, and connection—traits that are fundamental to good governance.”
The statement further argued that leadership should be judged not by profession, but by qualities such as vision, courage, and commitment to service.
In a separate viral video, a local influencer known as Funny Thinker also joined the chorus of voices urging Oriyomi to run for office. “He said he won’t rest if we don’t. Okiki, the son of Hamzat, we are calling you—please answer us in 2027,” he said.
Oriyomi, responding briefly, said, “You will all be alright,” without confirming or denying his intentions.
As of the time of filing this report, Oriyomi has not made any official declaration regarding the 2027 elections, nor has he addressed the posters.
