Despite Nigeria’s conservative and religious environment, where discussions around sex are often muted, the sex toy industry is witnessing an unexpected surge, with products such as dildos flying off the shelves. This growing trend suggests a shift in societal attitudes as more citizens embrace sexual exploration amid economic challenges, reports Victor Ayeni.
Niniola who runs an adult entertainment store in the Ogudu area of Lagos, is busy most days catering to a diverse clientele. Her store, which also features a spa, offers a variety of intimate products including lingerie, sexual enhancers, lubricants, vibrators, dildos, and BDSM kits. The 28-year-old microbiology graduate ventured into the sex toy business in 2020, a year after completing her National Youth Service Corps.
According to Niniola, the discreet location of her store has been a key factor in attracting customers who value privacy. She noted that most of her sales are conducted through social media platforms and messaging apps, catering to the demand for anonymity. “My customers don’t have to come here physically,” she explained. “They can contact us, choose from our catalogue, pay for the products, and we handle delivery discreetly.”
Niniola’s clients include a wide range of individuals—married, single, divorced, and those with partners abroad. “Our goal is to ensure their maximum pleasure,” she said, adding that feedback from her customers is generally positive. On her social media pages, she showcases various products available in her store, inviting potential clients to reach out privately.
When asked if the economic downturn has affected her business, Niniola laughed, recalling the surge in sales during the COVID-19 lockdown. “People were seeking fulfillment during the lockdown, and even now, the demand remains strong. No matter the economic situation, people will always find a way to satisfy their sexual needs.”
Mrs. Bunmi , a mother of two, shared a similar experience. Initially hesitant to use sex toys due to her religious background, she eventually turned to them to address her marital challenges. “My husband had issues with premature ejaculation, and I wasn’t satisfied. Rather than cheat, I decided to try sex toys. They have made a significant difference,” she said.
Many women like Mrs. Awoyemi use sex toys to enhance their sexual experiences, while single women prefer them as a safer alternative to casual relationships. “It’s better to use a dildo than risk getting infections or having your heart broken,” said Cynthia, a hairstylist.
As the industry continues to thrive, it highlights a growing acceptance of sexual health and pleasure, even in a traditionally conservative society.
