Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerian media professionals to focus on objectively speaking truth to power rather than antagonizing the government. He emphasized the distinction between constructive criticism and hostility, urging journalists to balance personal allegiance with a commitment to truth. Shettima made these remarks during the launch of “Persona Non Grata,” a book by journalist Ismail Omipidan, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel’s Ladi Kwali Hall.
Drawing from Plato’s “The Republic,” Shettima highlighted the role of the intellectual class, particularly journalists, as the nation’s conscience. He stated that no political leader can excel beyond the knowledge available to them and underscored the need for courageous media professionals to hold power accountable. He added that true courage lies in resisting compromise in the pursuit of truth, distinguishing it from cowardice.
The Vice President commended Omipidan for demonstrating that true allegiance in journalism is to society rather than oneself. He recommended the book to both practicing and aspiring journalists seeking to balance personal interests with a commitment to truth.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola, praised the book as a profound commentary on the complexities of power and public perception. Book reviewer Lasisi Olagunju noted that the work chronicles Omipidan’s early life and professional experiences, offering insights into his character and journalistic integrity.
In his closing remarks, Omipidan expressed gratitude to Vice President Shettima for attending the event and reflected on their decade-long discussion about writing the book. He also acknowledged Oyetola’s integrity, which influenced his decision to work with him during his tenure as Governor of Osun State.
