Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has joined the ongoing protest in Lagos State, leading a call for change on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day. Sowore, one of the key organizers, arrived at the protest site at Ikeja Underbridge at 8:50 am.
In an address to the press, Sowore described the protest as a significant step toward taking Nigeria to the “promised land.” He emphasized that the demonstration symbolized the people’s rejection of the government’s Independence Day celebrations, which they see as disconnected from the hardships Nigerians are facing.
Sowore also questioned whether the government deserved more chances, referencing how former President Muhammadu Buhari allegedly misused the extra time given to him. “Have we not tried enough? We gave them more time, and what did they do? They bought private jets, new houses, increased fuel prices, and left us in darkness,” Sowore stated. He further criticized the government for awarding themselves luxury while ordinary Nigerians struggle with the minimum wage.
The protest began on Tuesday morning with participants gathering at Ikeja Underbridge, coinciding with the country’s Independence Day celebrations. A heavy security presence, including police officers, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, is closely monitoring the situation as protesters march along Awolowo Way.
The protest reflects growing discontent among Nigerians who feel that government policies have exacerbated the economic challenges facing the country.
