President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for approving the state of emergency in Rivers State, describing the decision as a vital step toward restoring order and protecting the national economy.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives for prioritizing national security over political divisions. He specifically acknowledged Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for their commitment to unity and stability.
According to the president, the crisis in Rivers State had reached a dangerous level, threatening critical oil and gas infrastructure and jeopardizing the economic reforms his administration has pursued since taking office in May 2023. He noted that the National Assembly’s decision followed an in-depth review of security intelligence, which underscored the urgent need for intervention to prevent further deterioration.
Tinubu reiterated that his March 18 nationwide address outlined the severity of the situation, pointing to governance breakdown, threats to federal assets, and looming violence. He emphasized that the emergency measure was necessary to protect lives, secure infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability.
The president had earlier declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly members. He also appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as the state’s sole administrator to oversee governance and restore order.
The emergency declaration came just hours after an explosion was reported at an oil facility in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, further highlighting security concerns in the state. Under the emergency measures, the appointed administrator will work to stabilize governance, address systemic challenges, and mediate disputes among key stakeholders.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to peace and economic stability, Tinubu emphasized that the National Assembly’s swift action demonstrated the power of unity and patriotism in governance. He urged all stakeholders to support efforts to restore lasting peace in Rivers State, assuring Nigerians that his government remains focused on building a safer and more prosperous nation.
