A tragic stampede during a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday has reportedly claimed the lives of several children, with many others injured. The incident occurred at Basorun Islamic High School, where the private end-of-year event was being held.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the stampede began when the large crowd, mainly children, attempted to push through the main gate of the venue. Reports suggest the event, originally planned for 5,000 children, was overwhelmed by a turnout exceeding 7,500, contributing to the chaotic scene.
The Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the incident and noted that the state government had mobilized a rapid response team. Victims were quickly transported to various hospitals within Ibadan for urgent medical attention.
Oyelade expressed the government’s condolences to the affected families and emphasized the need for better coordination in organizing events involving children. He also clarified that the government was not involved in the planning of the event and had not been approached to provide logistical support.
Parents seeking their children have been directed to hospitals where victims were taken, including Patnas Hospital, Basorun; Western Hospital, Basorun; Ringroad State Hospital; Molly Specialist Hospital; and the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Medical personnel have reported both fatalities and survivors among the children brought in for treatment.
The government has pledged to provide necessary support to the victims and their families while awaiting a detailed report from the police to ascertain the exact number of casualties. Parents are urged to remain calm as investigations continue.
