The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that two people were injured after a training aircraft belonging to the Aviation Training School in Ilorin crash-landed on Friday evening.
The incident occurred around 5:28 p.m. during a simulated instrument approach on Runway 05 at Ilorin International Airport. The aircraft, a Diamond training model, veered off the runway and came to a halt on the grass verge.
Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, revealed that both occupants sustained serious injuries and were promptly evacuated to a medical facility. The evacuation was coordinated by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
NSIB has dispatched its Go-Team from Abuja to Ilorin to begin an on-site investigation into the accident.
Speaking on the incident, NSIB Director General Capt. Alex Badeh Jr. extended support to the victims and praised the rapid emergency response. He stressed that the primary focus now is on uncovering the cause of the crash.
“Every investigation presents an opportunity to make aviation safer,” he said, assuring the public that the bureau will conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
He also urged the public and media to refrain from speculation and to wait for verified information as the investigation unfolds.
