On October 24, 2024, the SWOT Team Organization for Educational Development International hosted the inaugural Bookworm Challenge 1.0 in Ilorin, Kwara State. Held at the NSE Branch, Tanke, Ilorin, this groundbreaking event sought to foster a culture of reading and intellectual growth among participants. The program also honored Prof. Saudat Salah Abdulbaqi, Kwara State’s first female professor of Mass Communication, highlighting her contributions to education.
The event drew a diverse crowd of book lovers and newcomers to literature, all eager to engage in this unique celebration of reading. Structured into junior and senior sessions, participants tackled literary challenges, including book-based examinations and interactive discussions. Junior contestants explored ‘Effective Guide to Becoming a Public Speaking Star’ by Basheer Luqman Olarewaju, while seniors discussed ‘Second Chance’ by Comrade Abdullateef Ishowo, covering genres from fiction to historical works.
Anchored by Idris Abdulganiy Yinka and a representative of the Matta Girls Foundation, the event featured opening remarks emphasizing the importance of reading. Profound poetic tributes honoring Prof. Abdulbaqi were presented, including a unique poem using mathematical terms by Abdulmujeeb Muhammed, alongside a heartfelt tribute from Alamu Rofiat.
Competing schools demonstrated impressive engagement, with top performances from Al-Halal International School, Ilorin Grammar School, and others. Winners received trophies, medals, and school supplies sponsored by the Matta Girls Foundation, with certificates awarded to all participants.
The Bookworm Challenge 1.0 successfully inspired a passion for literature, sparking enthusiasm for regular reading and critical thinking. Participant feedback highlighted interest in future programs, suggesting expansion to include more book discussions or the establishment of a book club. This inaugural event stands as a testament to the power of reading in nurturing critical thinking and community connection in Kwara State.
