The United States Government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Nigerian women entrepreneurs, aiming to unlock their economic potential and contribute to greater stability and prosperity.
The Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), launched in 2019, provides training and resources to women with existing small businesses. A recent three-day program in Lagos brought together 150 AWE alumni to enhance their digital skills, fostering innovation and sustainable growth in their businesses.
US Consul-General in Nigeria, Will Stevens, noted that the program has seen remarkable growth among its alumni, with 30 to 50 new participants selected annually. The initiative connects participants with mentors in the US and Nigeria, fostering a supportive network among Nigerian women entrepreneurs.
Adebisi Odeleye, President of the AWE Alumni Association, credited US government grants for significantly boosting business expansion among participants. This testimonial underscores the tangible impact of the program on Nigerian women’s economic empowerment.
In a related development, Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR) and UN Women launched the Affirmative Procurement Project to promote gender-responsive procurement practices. This initiative aims to increase women’s participation in economic and public life, addressing the systemic barriers hindering their access to procurement opportunities.
Nigeria has seen over 200 companies pledge support for the Women Empowerment Principles, addressing the disparity between women-owned businesses and access to corporate procurement contracts. Women-owned businesses represent 40% of small and medium enterprises globally but receive less than 1% of corporate procurement contracts. This initiative seeks to bridge this gap, promoting economic inclusivity and gender equality.
The US Government’s commitment to empowering Nigerian women entrepreneurs demonstrates its dedication to promoting economic growth, stability, and prosperity in the region. By supporting women’s economic empowerment, the US Government is investing in Nigeria’s future, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
