Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to supporting victims of flooding and insecurity across Nigeria, with a promise of additional reliefs for severely affected states. During an assessment visit to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Gwada, Niger State, Shettima emphasized the administration’s focus on effective governance and the welfare of all Nigerians, beyond political considerations.
The Vice President’s visit was part of the federal government’s efforts to enhance support for displaced communities, following the recent flooding and insecurity challenges that have affected several states. Shettima assured the IDPs that the federal government, in collaboration with state governments and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), is actively working to address their needs.
Shettima recalled that the federal government had already disbursed ₦3 billion to each state to address flooding issues, but emphasized that this is just the beginning of a more comprehensive support plan. He explained that states’ eligibility for additional support will be evidence-driven and based on detailed assessments of needs, ensuring that the most affected states receive the necessary assistance.
The Vice President highlighted the administration’s commitment to national development, citing ongoing infrastructure projects such as the East-West Road and the Sokoto-Badagry Road. He assured that returning IDPs to their communities is a priority and that the federal and state governments, in collaboration with NEMA, are working on additional interventions to support the displaced persons.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State expressed his gratitude to the federal government delegation led by the Vice President for showing solidarity with the state during this challenging time. He informed the Vice President that the Gwada camp is one of 14 camps across the state housing those displaced by both floods and insecurity.
The visit was attended by other dignitaries, including Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi; Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Sen. Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, and Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar.
