Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the need for a strengthened partnership between the government and the media to support Nigeria’s national development. Addressing the leadership of the Nigerian Guild of Editors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, VP Shettima called for a balanced relationship that fosters national unity and economic progress, describing media leaders as the “conscience of the nation.”
“We must prioritize governance over politics,” Shettima stated, underscoring that unity should take precedence over divisions. He also acknowledged the economic difficulties facing the media, pledging government support to ensure sustainability and uphold quality journalism. “The government is committed to assisting the media sector in maintaining its vital role,” he said, urging editors to uphold objectivity while contributing to national progress.
Responding, Nigerian Guild of Editors President, Eze Anaba, commended the Vice President’s commitment to transparent governance, especially in his role as Chairman of the National Economic Council. Anaba expressed the media’s readiness to collaborate with the government while maintaining editorial independence and announced the 20th All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC), scheduled for November 7-9 in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
