October holds significant meaning for Nigeria, the most populous Black nation, as it marks the country’s independence. This same month coincides with the birth of one of Nigeria’s finest assets, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), born on the 16th of October. Prof. Sulaiman, a passionate and patriotic Nigerian, is celebrated for his role in shaping the nation’s development. His birth in the same month as Nigeria’s independence seems symbolic of the crucial role he plays in the country’s progress.
Prof. Sulaiman is a pan-Nigerian leader and a unifier, whose friendships and influence cut across regions, tribes, and political divides. Born in Ilorin, his disciplined and humble beginnings formed the foundation for a life dedicated to hard work, humility, and leadership. In 1993, he boldly challenged the political status quo by running for the chairmanship of Ilorin West Local Government, a move seen as courageous and groundbreaking at the time.
A self-made man, Prof. Sulaiman navigated the paths of both Islamic and Western education, ultimately earning a Ph.D. in Political Science and becoming a distinguished professor. Despite early expectations to follow his father’s footsteps as a Sheikh, he balanced religious and secular education, excelling in both.
In academia, Prof. Sulaiman’s reputation is unparalleled. He is recognized as a professor of professors, with over two decades of experience teaching and researching in political science and international relations. His academic prowess led to his appointment as Minister of National Planning in 2014, where he left lasting contributions, including the formulation of the National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP).
In 2019, he was appointed as DG NILDS and has since enhanced the capacity of Nigeria’s legislative institutions. His leadership has ushered in innovations such as digitalization, the Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture Series, and the completion of a world-class permanent site for the institute. Reappointed in 2023, Prof. Sulaiman continues to prove his transformational leadership, earning numerous awards, including the 2023 Integrity and Public Servant of the Year Award.
Despite his achievements, Prof. Sulaiman remains humble and dedicated, tirelessly working to serve the country. His generosity and philanthropic efforts, particularly in empowering youth through education and job opportunities, have endeared him to many. Through his Amana Foundation, he provides scholarships, summer lessons, and job placements for thousands of young people, ensuring their future success.
Reflecting on Prof. Sulaiman’s life, it is clear that his commitment to Nigeria is not just professional but personal. His contributions to the community, state, and nation make him an exemplary leader worth celebrating. As he turns 59, we honor this servant leader and visionary, wishing him many more years of impactful service.
